PROGRESSION – Should be 9/10ths of the Law!

You know, when it comes to daily living (in our health, spiritual journey, intelligence, or physical conditioning), we need to always keep a conscious check on our progress. We become so easily distracted with the "little things" no matter how big they may seem. We fail to keep the bigger picture in mind – which is not easy – not when you're dealing with one difficult issue after another. Regarding our faith walk, this is why I believe it's so important to continue to meditate upon the truths that God has given us. It helps us maintain His perspective about life so that we see things as He does. In fact, when we attempt to see things through God's eyes (by way of meditating on His truths and praying for His guidance), then we become more like Him, gain and maintain His unique perspective and thereby, PROGRESS in our faith. If God has truly done a work in our hearts, then the fruit of His Spirit will become manifest in our lives:

". . . love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control . . ."

(Galatians 5:22-23)

I don't know about you, but for me, these particular attributes are what I need on a moment by moment basis to be the best that I can be. The amazing thing is that they come from God! Being tapped into Him means being supercharged to plow through all the daily muck and mire.

Furthermore, it's the only way that we can keep moving forward – PROGRESSING and not sliding backwards!

My prayer for all of us today is that we keep ourselves "plugged in" to our real Source of strength and wisdom:

  1. Focus on God's truth.
  2. Pray for His strength, wisdom and guidance.
  3. Decide to consciously follow what He reveals.
  4. PROGRESS in your faith and move forward!

Don’t Worry About Anything

These are the apostle Paul's inspired words of encouragement for those of us who tend to get bogged down in the muck and mire of everyday existence. They come from a profound understanding that for those who have a true faith in God – that He will watch over and protect – come what may. To give you the full context of this passage, I'll quote it below. It comes from Philippians 4: 4-9. It's one of my favorite biblical passages. I'll quote it from the Amplified Bible, as it tends to elaborate well on certain terms by defining them in parentheses.

4 Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, gladden yourselves in Him]; again I say, Rejoice!

5 Let all men know and perceive and recognize your unselfishness (your considerateness, your forbearing spirit). The Lord is near [He is coming soon].

6 Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God.

7 And God's peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

8 For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].

9 Practice what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and model your way of living on it, and the God of peace (of untroubled, undisturbed well-being) will be with you.

For those of us who have a particular problem with focusing on the negative (ah, that would be me), I bolded verse 8. I find that if I keep that particular passage in the forefront of my mind, that it's easier to traverse difficult moments during the day. It's a way that I can proactively affect my life. I must continuously remind myself that there's no place in my mind and life for the negative. The only thing negativity does is propagate more negative, stress and anxiety. Does the phrase "sick with worry" sound familiar?

Join me today in meditating upon the truths that are written above. If we practice them, then I truly believe and know that God's peace (as stated above in vs. 7), which truly does pass all understanding, will pervade our hearts and minds – even through the difficulties that we are facing.

If We’re Not Actively Surviving, We’re Passively Dying!

The above title is profound, to say the least. I wish I could claim its authorship, but I cannot. My friend and co-writer Ori Hofmekler came up with this philosophical quote. He applies it to fitness, health and nutrition. Over the past couple of years, I've adopted the philosophy for myself as well, but not only in terms of health, fitness and nutrition, but also to the spiritual side of my life. Being a minister and Christian myself, I find that the concept is actually quite biblical as well.

The apostle Paul wrote in Philippians to " . . . work out our salvation with fear and trembling . . ."

Our faith walk with God is a daily, hourly, and sometimes moment by moment pursuit to be, do, act, respond and advance as Christ would want. In the midst of my life relationships, I find that we all have challenges, struggles and issues through which we all must navigate. The question is who is doing the navigating? Do we aimlessly wander through life without an "active" pursuit to survive these difficulties? Do we leave our circumstances to some unknown fate, with no clear direction as to where we're going?

I know that in my life, I choose to take the higher road – one which is directed by the teachings of Christ – Who understood the temptations and pains of being human, yet also being God, always made the right choices. He understood that just as silver and gold are only purified by fire, so are our lives refined, by the fire of trials and struggle.

The thing we must constantly remind ourselves is that it's a daily choice – to endure the trial – holding true to our convictions, because we know they are right – because we know that the rules by which our lives should be governed, are what God has stated are true. They are what God has determined will help us survive, to flourish and to have ultimate victory.

Let's determine to keep our eyes on the prize, knowing full well that as we choose to actively survive, that we'll soon cross that chasm of pain, discomfort and despair – only to find ourselves much better off when we arrive on the other side.

Being Thankful for the Trial

I'm just sitting here today at the beach.

It's early morning and as I watch the sun break just above the ocean, I can't help but think about how thankful I am, just to be healthy and alive. This morning, God brought some bible verses to mind, specifically from the book of James in the New Testament. After having surgery and overcoming the anxiety surrounding it, I can close my eyes, feel the sun on my face and thank God for my health and my life, and for the fact that the trial is over. By His grace and strength, I have endured. Below, are His words that He shared with me today. In like manner, I share them with you:

  • Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations.
  • Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience.

  • But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing.

  • If any of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask of the giving God [Who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or faultfinding, and it will be given him.

  • Only it must be in faith that he asks with no wavering (no hesitating, no doubting). For the one who wavers (hesitates, doubts) is like the billowing surge out at sea that is blown hither and thither and tossed by the wind.

  • For truly, let not such a person imagine that he will receive anything [he asks for] from the Lord,

  • [For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides].

  • Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his elevation [as a Christian, called to the true riches and to be an heir of God],

  • And the rich [person ought to glory] in being humbled [by being shown his human frailty], because like the flower of the grass he will pass away.

  • For the sun comes up with a scorching heat and parches the grass; its flower falls off and its beauty fades away. Even so will the rich man wither and die in the midst of his pursuits.

  • Blessed (happy, to be envied) is the man who is patient under trial and stands up under temptation, for when he has stood the test and been approved, he will receive [the victor's] crown of life which God has promised to those who love Him.

That last verse is my prayer today for all of those who are enduring trial, temptation, heartache or suffering. We should all endeavor to receive the promised "crown of life" as we persevere through the difficulties of this life!

Counting Calories

I was watching the Today show recently. Their health/fitness/nutrition editor was being interviewed by Matt Lauer regarding the most popular diets that people are trying to follow these days. She had actual plates of food on display - representative of each particular diet. She then went on to pontificate upon the fact that no one could follow any of these diets for too long, as they all were too restrictive. I tended to agree with what she was saying until she made the statement -

"It's all about counting calories."

What really gets me is how people (and particularly this "expert") can make such casual statements on national TV without a proper understanding of what's really going on. I guess it's due to the overwhelming sway of popular thought to believe such misinformation. The fact is -

IT'S NOT ABOUT COUNTING CALORIES!

It's about chemicals and pesticides and hormones and toxins in the foods we eat, the water we drink, the lotions that we put on our skin, and the air that we breathe.

The truth is that our bodies are "fearfully and wonderfully made". Yeah, I'm quoting a bit of the Bible here, but the veracity of this statement is that our bodies are incredible machines. We were created to eat to our heart's content - the foods that are NATURALLY available to us. Most of the foods we eat these days are not NATURAL at all. In fact, they have as many chemicals and harmful additives as they do real nutritional content.

THIS IS WHAT IS MAKING US FAT AND SICK!

It's not rocket science, it's actually good common sense. And it's not even hard to wrap your brain around the issue. Think about it the next time you put "food" into your mouth. Read the label. If you don't understand the contents, then you're putting something into your body that ultimately will cause you health problems.

If this is the kind of stuff you're eating on a regular basis, then quit asking yourself, "Why am I fat and sick?" Instead, ask yourself, what foods can I change in my diet that will make me lean and healthy.

Once you make this transition, you'll be well on your way to being a much healthier person!

Estrogenic Chemicals May Be the Hidden Cause for Your Fat Gain and Other Disorders

Weight Gain and Other Disorders

The "thickening" of women's bodies and the "softening" of men's bodies are often related to excess estrogen.

When in excess, estrogen promotes the growth of estrogen sensitive tissues, leading to an increased size of adipose (fat) tissues in the waist, belly and other estrogen sensitive fat tissues: for men, typically in the belly and chest; for women, in the belly, lower buttocks, upper thighs and sometimes in the back of the arms. In some cases, excess estrogen causes feminization of men's bodies with conditions such as gynecomastia.

Estrogen sensitive fat tissues are also called "stubborn fat" due to their high resistance to fat burning. Generally, not even diet or exercise can help remove this estrogen sensitive tenacious fat. Excess estrogen works in a vicious cyclical manner. Estrogen promotes fat gain, and the enlarged fat tissue produces more estrogen within its cells, which then promotes more fat gain, and so on and so forth. The only solution is to attack the core of the problem, which is excess estrogen.

Excess estrogen can lead into overgrowth of other estrogen sensitive tissues such as the lining of the endometrium (endometriosis), or ovarian fibroids in women, and the enlargement of the prostate gland in men. If untreated, such conditions can lead into cancer.

Considering all of the above, it becomes evidently clear that we're living today under an ever-growing risk of getting fatter and sicker due to estrogenic chemicals and other factors that contribute to excess estrogens. The question is what can be done to lower this risk? How can we defend our lives against excess estrogen?

Defense against excess estrogen

The problem of excess estrogen is gradually gaining recognition. However, there is still much confusion among mainstream nutritionists and medical authorities as to how to address this problem. In many cases, the problem of excess estrogen is overlooked or ignored, leaving patients with almost no choice but to take drugs, which often accelerates the problem, causing severe and even mortal side effects. The solution to excess estrogen requires the means to counterattack estrogen and its excess in a natural and safe way.

It is now known that certain compounds in plants (belonging to the family of flavonoids and indoles) can help counter estrogen actions, and defend the body against its excess.

Estrogen isn't one hormone, but rather a group of hormones and their metabolites. Estrogen hormones and their metabolites compete with each other on binding to estrogen receptors. Most important, estrogen can convert into two kinds of metabolites (byproducts): beneficial and harmful — one or the other. The key to defend the body against excess estrogen is by countering its excess and by shifting its metabolism into producing beneficial antioxidant, anti-cancerous metabolites, instead of toxic cancer promoting metabolites.

It is now known that certain compounds in plants (belonging to the family of flavonoids and indoles) can help counter estrogen actions, and defend the body against its excess. Called estrogen inhibitors, these compounds work in three different ways:

  • Inhibit estrogen production (bind and de-activate the cytochrome P 450 aromatase enzyme that converts androgens to estrogen)
  • Lower estrogen receptors activity
  • Shift estrogen metabolism to produce beneficial metabolites

Recent lab studies found that estrogen inhibitors work better when combined together. A stack of estrogen inhibitors have shown to provide a superior defense against excess estrogen. Though the research on plant estrogen inhibitors is still young, there is a growing amount of evidence as to the potential benefits of plant compounds (phytonutrients) in treating metabolic problems, including estrogen related disorders and lowering the risk for cancer.

It is very likely that the human body has been primarily pre-programmed to be nourished and protected by phytonutrients. Unfortunately, due to industrial harvesting and processing methods, food today is often deficient in most beneficial phytonutrients, leaving people with inadequate nutritional defenses. Estrogen inhibiting phytonutrients are a major missing link in the diet. To effectively support a healthy hormonal system, it is critically important to provide the body with sufficient amounts of estrogen inhibiting phytonutrients to balance against the overwhelming surplus of estrogenic food substances and chemicals in the diet.

The concept of healthy nutrition should be re-defined. New nutritional guidelines should direct people on how to incorporate estrogen inhibitors with estrogen promoters to effectively balance their diets.

The Solution

Certain compounds in plants, called flavonoids and indoles, are known to possess antioxidant and anti-cancerous properties. Recent studies reveal that some of these compounds have the capacity to affect estrogen metabolism; some work as estrogen inhibitors whereas others work as estrogen promoters.

Due to the fact that the typical diet is low in some estrogen inhibiting nutrients and almost totally deficient in others, it is highly recommended to supplement with estrogen inhibitors to cover the bases, and provide the body with sufficient amounts of ammunition to fight back excess estrogen.

Since we live in an "over-estrogenic world", loaded with overwhelming amounts of estrogenic chemicals, it makes sense to regard estrogen promoters as "bad guys" and estrogen inhibitors as "good guys". In an ideal world, both anti-estrogenic and pro-estrogenic substances play important roles in supporting our metabolic system. Nevertheless, due to the ever growing problem of estrogen dominance, with an excess of estrogen chemicals in our lives, it makes sense to regard estrogen promoters as part of the problem and vice versa, estrogen inhibitors should be regarded as part of the solution.

"Good Guys" vs. "Bad Guys"

In a nut shell, the "good guys" are estrogen inhibiting compounds in plants (flavonoids and indoles). Found in passiflora, chamomile, bee products, citrus fruits, onion, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cabbage). Other beneficial estrogen modulators are omega 3 fatty acids (N-3), derived from flaxseeds, hempseeds and fatty fish.

On the other side, there are the "bad guys", the estrogen promoters. This list consists of pesticides and herbicides in fruits and vegetables, hormones in meat and dairy, soy and products high in soy isoflavones, other estrogenic isoflavones (such as in the herb black cohosh), plastic derivatives in packed food and water, diets high in animal fat and excessive consumption of omega 6 rich oils (such as canola, corn, safflower and soy oils).

Note that processing increases the concentration of the already existing estrogenic compounds in food. For that matter, processed soy products may be more estrogenic than soy beans (edamame). For the same reason, commercially processed milk or whey protein products may be more estrogenic than regular milk or yogurt, unless they're organic or pesticide free.

Some compounds are neutral to estrogen. Omega 9 fatty acids (monounsaturated oil) such as in olive oil, nuts and seeds are neutral and safe to use. To a certain degree, so are fruits with a peel such as bananas or avocados, which are safer than unpeeled fruits such as conventional grapes or strawberries.

In conclusion, to effectively defend the body against excess estrogen, one should incorporate an Anti-Estrogenic Diet (by increasing the intake of estrogen inhibiting compounds, and decreasing the intake of estrogen promoting compounds). Due to the fact that the typical diet is low in some estrogen inhibiting nutrients and almost totally deficient in others, it is highly recommended to supplement with estrogen inhibitors to cover the bases, and provide the body with sufficient amounts of ammunition to fight back excess estrogen.

It's important to be proactive and make the right choices of food and supplements. All essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants must be provided to support the body's metabolism. Together with estrogen inhibitors, such nourishment can help enhance the liver's capacity to detoxify and neutralize excess estrogen, finally creating the right metabolic environment within the body to get leaner and healthier.

Certain Foods Surprisingly Affect Your Weight & Health

Many of you may not realize it, but there are actually certain foods and herbs that you can eat on a daily basis that will help you stay lean and healthy, but unfortunately there are also certain foods that have the opposite effect. In fact, not only can these foods make you fat, but they can also make you sick. One I would like to address in this article is soy.

Did you know that soy products can actually cause weight gain and other disorders?

Many think that soy is the new dairy. It may be new, but what most people don't realize is that soy actually has a metabolic effect in the body like estrogen does. If you're male, do you want to be increasing the estrogen content in your body? Or, if you're female, do you want excess estrogens circulating throughout your body? Do you know what this can do to you? I've spoken to numerous people who have been eating "healthy" by replacing all dairy with soy. Yes, they lose weight, but many can't figure out why the stubborn fat and metabolic disorders persists.

I'll tell you why I think that soy is a contributing factor.

Briefly, soy actually contains phytoestrogens. Although natural, phytoestrogens have an estrogenic effect on the body. And, when your body has an excess of estrogen, do you know what happens? Well, lots of things, but one of the most obvious signs is the formation of stubborn fat, particularly in the chest and belly in men, and in the hips and thighs for women.

But soy is only the tip of the iceberg. There are many other particular estrogenic chemicals that we are ingesting on a regular basis that are causing us problems.

I'll write more on these later. Meanwhile, if you'd like to learn more about this issue now, you can check out www.DefenseNutrition.com.

Estrogenic Toxins Are Making Us Fat and Sick

On a daily basis, we’re constantly burdened with making wise decisions regarding proper food choices. More and more of us are strolling through the grocery store, reading ingredient labels on item packaging in hopes of finding food that not only tastes good, but is truly healthy. But what if our concept of “healthy” food is misconstrued? What if much of our good intentions are misinformed?

The most obvious choice when deciding what to eat, is to select foods that are “low fat” and “low carb.” Popular dietary thought teaches three main ideas (or some variation of the three) about healthy eating and weight loss: if we eat less fat, we’ll gain less fat; if we eat fewer carbs, we’ll lose more weight: if we count calories, we’ll stay at our optimum weight - in fact, we may even lose weight because of such practices. Not so!

These days, it’s virtually impossible to be in public and not see someone struggling with obesity or excess weight. Everywhere you look, people are literally busting at the seams. Furthermore, many of us who appear to be thin and healthy, may very well be concealing some serious metabolic disorders under the surface. The fact is that we all know several people who struggle with their weight, are fighting cancer (breast, ovarian, prostate and many others), are sick with diabetes and high blood sugar, are suffering from cardiovascular issues or simply are feeling bad on a regular basis.

The fact of the matter is that eating a low carb, low fat diet and counting calories is not enough to prevent stubborn fat gain, cancer and other metabolic disorders. Even though Americans spend more and more on “health” foods and diet products every year, we’re becoming fatter and sicker.

It’s time to address the real issue – exposure to chemicals and toxins in food, water and the environment. Many of the very foods that we eat contain chemicals, preservatives and hormones – compounds that are proven to be toxic to our bodies.

The result?

Quite simply, our bodies respond with fat gain, cancer and metabolic disorders.
